Arayot and Sh'niyot

During my study of Masechet Y'vamot, I decided that it would be helpful to have a nice, clear family tree of all the people that Jewish law prohibits one from marrying (you know, for quick reference, in case someone ever wanted to date his mother's father's son's wife). OK, so it's not really so practical, but it's still interesting. It's all done from the perspective of an individual male; women, work backwards (sorry). The rectangles are arayot (d'oraiyta/biblical) and the ovals are sh'niyot (d'rabanan/rabbinic); see the lower left corner for a more detailed legend.

Note that this family tree does not include generational extensions (e.g., just as you can't marry your aunt, you also can't marry your great-great-grandmother's aunt; similar extensions apply to most arayot and sh'niyot). Also, this chart is not meant to be a p'sak halachah for any real situation; please contact your local rabbi before marrying anybody!

And now, on to the chart... Next
