"And thou shalt take in thy hand this rod." (Exodus 4:17) The rod was created at twilight [on creation's sixth day] and was handed to Adam in the Garden of Eden. Adam handed it to Enoch, Enoch to Shem, Shem to Abraham, Abraham to Isaac, Isaac to Jacob; Jacob took it toEgypt and handed it to his son Joseph. When Joseph died, all his household effects were moved and deposited in Pharoah's palace. Now, Jethro was one of Pharoah's magicians. When he saw the rod and the signs on it, he coveted it in his heart and took it, brought it to his place, and planted it in the garden by his house. No man could come near it until Moses arrived in the land of Midian, entered the garden of Jethro's house, saw the rod, made out the signs on it, stretched forth his hand, and took it. When Jethro saw this, he said: This man is destined to redeem Israel from Egypt. This is why he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses as his wife.
