The Alphabet of Ben Sira

Here is my translation of a relevant portion of Ben Sira.

"Regarding these three it can be said that they gave birth without having had sexual relations. And these are the mother of Ben Sira, the mother of Rav Zeira, and the mother of Rav Papah. And they were all wise men, great in knowledge of Torah and in good deeds… And how did these mothers become pregnant without having relations? Once they went into the bathhouse and there was the seed of Jewish men in the water, and they did not know from which man came the seed. But we know the identity of Ben Sira's father. The prophet Jeremiah had a daughter. Once, Jeremiah went into the bathhouse and found a group of evil men from the tribe of Ephraim who were masturbating. Because the generation in the days of [King] Tzidkiyahu was evil, and therefore it says, "In Tzidkiyahu was the evil deed." When they saw that Jeremiah began to reprimand them they stood over him and struck him. They said to him, "Why do you reprimand us? You shall not leave here until you do as we have done." Jeremiah answered, "Please, let me go, and I will swear to you that I will never tell anyone of this." They replied, "And did not Tzidkiyahu, who saw Nebuchadnezzar eating a live rabbit also swear that he would never tell, only to get that oath annuled? And you will do likewise [and get the oath annulled]! And now, if you do as we have done, all will be well. If not, we will sodomize you." Immediately Jeremiah did it and began to curse the day he was born… and he accepted upon himself a fast, and ritually immersed himself and emerged pure. But the seed lasted and did not rot, until his daughter entered the bathhouse and it entered her womb and impregnated her. Seven months later she bore a son. And this son exited [her womb] with the ability to speak, and his mother was embarrassed from all creatures, that they should not say "the daughter of Jeremiah bore a son from illicit relations."

He said, "Mother, do not be embarrassed. I am the son of Sira." His mother asked, "Who is Sira?" He replied, "My father. [Alternatively, your father.] He (Jeremiah) is called Sira because he is the officer on all the officers and the king, and numerologically, Jeremiah is equivalent to Sira." She asked, "My son, if so, you should have said 'Son of Jeremiah'..."
